What Is Duct Sealing?

Did you know that faulty ductwork can account for up to 30% of your home’s total air loss? That’s a lot of air to lose, and you’ll lose it whether it’s cooling season or heating season. A great way to significantly reduce or even eliminate the problems created by faulty ductwork is to hire the experts at Downtown Air & Heat to perform professional duct sealing on your ductwork in Orlando, FL. What is duct sealing? We’ll explain below.

How It Works

Professional duct sealing goes far beyond slapping a piece of duct tape onto a hole or crack. First, the materials used create a long-term seal that truly works. The main material used is a fibrous adhesive called mastic which hardens after application. To seal holes and cracks, your technician will first brush on the mastic, then place a piece of foil or fiberglass tape on top of it to secure the seal; the mastic is then left to dry. For sections that have become disconnected, the two ends are brushed with mastic, joined and secured with metal binding. When the mastic cures (hardens), the section is fully sealed.

Why Schedule Duct Sealing?

As mentioned above, you can lose a great deal of cool (or warm) air to faulty ductwork, but there are other reasons to consider professional duct sealing for your home:

  • Improve indoor air quality – faulty ductwork doesn’t just allow air to escape, it also allows contaminants and pollution in, which can decrease your indoor air quality considerably.
  • Reduce the stress on your HVAC system – when you lose significant amounts of air to faulty ductwork, your HVAC system will work hard to compensate for this, increasing the levels of wear and tear.
  • Reduce energy bills – the harder your system has to work, the more energy it uses; fixing faulty ductwork helps usage levels get back to normal.
