Hurricane Matthew has struck the Casselberry, FL area, and we wish all members of our community the very best when recovering from the damage. It’s not the first hurricane to strike, nor will it be the last, but its effects are certainly going to be felt for a while to come. Its impact can extend to your heating and air conditioning system as well, and the last thing you want to do is turn either one on in the next few days or weeks, only to realize that it has suffered a serious breakdown or is otherwise in need of repair. The sooner you can get a jump on those issues, the better.
As you clean up the damage to your home and organize repairs, it’s a good idea to turn on your heater and your air conditioner, and let each one run for 20-30 minutes, then look for specific signs of trouble. Only a trained professional can properly diagnose the damage, but you can look for a few general indicators.
- Strange Noises. Strange noises qualify as anything you don’t associate with the normal functioning of your air conditioner. In most cases, the noises will stop when you turn off your HVAC system.
- Reduced Heating or Cooling Power. A problem with refrigerant, a clogged burner or a similar issue will cause the air emerging from your system to be warmer or cooler than you’d expect it to be.
- Reduced Air Flow. If the fan motor is damaged, electrical power is intermittent or there’s some kind of blockage in the system, the flow of air through your ducts will be reduced.
- Higher Bills. The easiest indicator of a subtle problem is a sudden or unexpected spike in your monthly energy bills. This is more of a long-term strategy than a short-term one, but it can give you sense of a subtle problem in the system,
