Repair or Replace? How to Make That Decision for your AC

Summers in Orlando, FL are too brutal to go without reliable air conditioning, and the longer your system runs, the sooner the day will arrive when you have to make a choice. Do you keep sinking money into repairing and maintaining an older system, or do you bite the bullet and get a new one? If you’re wrestling with that possibility, now is the ideal time to think about a replacement. But some older systems can still do quite well, and with regular maintenance, yours may still have plenty of life left. How expensive is too expensive when it comes to repairs? Only you can answer that question, but we have a few quick references to help you out.

Expired Warranties and Higher Bills

Once your air conditioner’s warranty has expired, you need to consider the possibility of replacement. If there’s no repair calls — in other words, it’s not actively breaking down — then you can gauge the need for replacing it by the comparative monthly costs of running it. Sooner or later, the inefficiency will get past the point that your monthly budget can bear, and when that happens, it’s probably time to order a replacement.

Repairs are Too Much

If your air conditioner is breaking down, you need to think about the overall costs involved. This can apply to multiple repair sessions in a comparatively brief period of time, or a single repair session that costs more than your system is worth. There’s also a formula you can apply that can make things easier. Add up the cost of all the repairs you’ve conducted on the system in the last six months. Then multiply that by the number of years you’ve had your AC. If the total is higher than $5,000, it’s probably time to replace it.
