What Is a SEER Rating?

A SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating is a measurement of your AC or heat pump’s cooling efficiency. It’s calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season, divided by the total electric energy input during that same time frame. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the system is.

Within the last decade, the federal government has mandated that all new central air conditioning equipment be at least SEER-13. However, there is equipment available rated as high as SEER-18 and even SEER-23.

What SEER Rating Is Best for My Home?

This will be dependent on a few factors, including the climate of your home. As our summers get pretty hot in Orlando, FL a higher SEER rating could be better. Older systems typically have a rating of 8-10, so typically a SEER-13 system is a good match.

But in addition to climate, you should consider the size of the unit, how often you expect to use your system, and how long you anticipate living in your home, to ensure you are making a decision that makes financial sense.

How Do I Find My SEER Rating?

Look for a yellow sticker labeled “Energy Guide” on your unit. This usually displays the unit’s SEER rating. The rating could also be listed near the top of the unit’s manufacturer label by the model and serial number. The SEER rating is at the beginning of the model number. For example, if you see a model number that starts with “13AC” then that unit has a SEER rating of 13.

No matter what type of AC system you choose, we will make sure that you are well-informed of your options and what SEER rating is best for your needs.
